Sleigh Bells Ring, Are You Sleeping?

If you don’t feel as refreshed as you’d like to be after the long Thanksgiving weekend, you’re not alone. And that slight exhaustion you feel now is bound to get worse as we move farther through the holiday season. The reason? Try overeating, drinking, and lack of sleep. An article published by the Associated Press reminded me of exactly that this past weekend, and it’s something to keep in mind if you want to start 2008 with a bang.

Face it: we work really hard in anticipation of enjoying a “relaxing” holiday break come December - plus all those parties leading up to (hopefully) a few days off. But when you think about it, we’re doing what wears us down the most this time of year: working late to get more done, shopping early on weekends because many stores open before sunrise, eating copious sweets, sugary and heavy foods at buffet tables, and drinking more alcohol than usual. Add to that the traveling many of us do to catch up with family and friends (often late into the night), and you’ve got a recipe for chronic overtiredness. It pretty much starts the day you ate the leftovers from Thanksgiving.

The holidays are most definitely a time of celebration, but they certainly aren’t a time of renewal. Which is why so many of us feel we need a vacation from the vacation come January 2nd. This can also be a stressful time period for some people, another reason behind the overeating and nightly tossing and turning. So imagine celebrating and getting the renewal we all need at the same time? Is this possible? A far cry? Well, I happen to think it is possible, but it does require attention to one big detail.

To get the best of both worlds, the key is to do your best to get a good night’s sleep. Focus on powering down one hour before bedtime. Avoid phones, computers (ahem, this includes cybershopping), stimulating television, gift wrapping, house cleaning, and eating and drinking during this sacred hour. Do something truly relaxing such as taking a warm bath and then settling into bed with a book or magazine.

Achieving high-quality sleep will act as a common denominator for allowing you to enjoy the holidays maximally while also minimizing their potential negative side effects. It will help you control your eating better because high-quality sleep is proven to factor into the regulation of your appetite hormones. In fact, numerous studies have come out in just the last five years that show sleep’s positive effects on weight control and your metabolism. Sleep more, weigh less. It doesn’t get much better than that. Don’t forget the extra sleep will rev your energy bank and allow you to spread good cheer. It will naturally rejuvenate your body on a cellular level, too, making you look and feel vibrant, which in turn lifts moods and spirits.

Because none of us wants to be called a Scrooge. And no one wants to welcome 2008 with an extra ten pounds packed around our waist.

Sleeping Soundly With a Teddy-SNAKE?

November 30th, 2007 at 04:29pm Under Sleep / Sleep Disorders

Boy with a Python
We all know that most people, especially the children, just cannot sleep soundly without something to cuddle or hug when they are in bed. But for this kid, he cannot sleep without the presence of a large python by his side.

(Source) Usually it’s a cuddly teddy bear or a favourite action figure that kids need before they can get to bed. But not for Cambodian six-year-old Sambath Uon; he needs “Lucky”, his trusty six-metre long python, before he can sleep.

Whoa, now that is something different. We all know that snakes are not the safest of animals to have as pets, more so to have them by your side when you are sleeping!

But if there is one thing that is a sign of good for this child, he may be holding such a prestige for now. That is unless the python has a change of heart and attacks.

Sleeping with the Right Celebrity

November 29th, 2007 at 08:40pm Under Sleep / Sleep Disorders

Get Out Of Bed
We all have our own world of fantasy. In most cases, we find ourselves wishing to be along with some popular celebrity, sleeping alongside them to our content. But with the wide array of celebrities available in the world, chances are these infatuated dreams of sleeping with them may become ever-changing.

We all know that dreams and wishes come true. But to wish for something like sleeping with them is wishful thinking. It is really more of a sexual fantasy that we all find and chances are we may come to a point of simply laughing about it. It is simply something that may be close to impossible.

(Source) Consequently, I believe that the entertainers we dream of being with define our sexual ideals (and peccadilloes). It says everything about who we really are and what we (at least think) we really want. This is why so many people in relationships have made pacts about what celebrities, if given a chance, they’re allowed to get a free pass to sleep with. In the end, they’re our defining fantasies, and we want to cling to the idea that they, like our dreams for happiness, could one day come true.

The Best Gift This Christmas is Sleep

November 28th, 2007 at 01:00pm Under Sleep / Sleep Disorders

Sound Pillows Sleep
Outside the usual shopping and gift giving that is expected to ensue this holiday season, why not allow workaholics and people on the go a simple yet memorable gift by allowing them to sleep and recharge their lost sleep from the past year. There is not much to spend nor problem to give. They just need to be told to take it easy and rest a bit. Anyway, it is the end of the year and they do deserve a break.

What better ways to give than to have them sleep it off in their homes or wherever they are? That is perhaps the best thing that they can get this Christmas rather than giving them sleeping pills which may only affect other health aspects of their lives.

Time Management and Sleep

November 27th, 2007 at 03:00pm Under Sleep / Sleep Disorders

Sleep and Time Management
Who knows what time it is in your region? For all you know, upon reading this, you should be in bed. But rather than laying down, you find yourself exploring the web for anything that may be of interest to you. Sometimes, it is a way of making you sleepy.

After a hyperactive day, chances are you may be wondering of the things that had transpired. It could be about work, about a special person or something about family. Anything can keep you up thinking or even get your working.

But sleep is something you really cannot force on yourself. There is the thing called time management to which our body clocks work on. Foregoing them may prove to be risky for health reasons. Also, whatever enthusiasm you have in your body may soon go away. It is still best to keep emotions in check and get back to your senses.

Body After Baby: Get Your Zs!

November 26th, 2007 at 10:00pm Under Sleep / Sleep Disorders

Did you catch that? It’s not news to me, but Reuters is reporting (and reminding many of us already in the know) that new moms should pay more attention to their sleep habits if they are to watch those extra pounds slip away. Harvard Medical School has presented research showing that women who sleep five hours or less a day when their babies are six months old are three times more likely than more rested mothers to have kept the extra weight on at the one-year mark.

Full disclosure: I’m not a woman and can’t imagine what it’s like to 1) be pregnant, and 2) lose that baby fat. But I am keenly aware of the frustrations that many women go through as they juggle motherhood and post-natal weight issues.

One of the rumors that frequently travels in women’s circles is the notion that if you don’t lose the extra weight from pregnancy within a year of giving birth, you’re doomed to keep it forever (or at least have serious trouble getting rid of it). I don’t think that’s backed by science, but I bet there is plenty of anecdotal evidence to show for it. Wouldn’t it be great if you could literally sleep those pounds off (and forget about focusing so much on changing your diet and doing more exercise)?

The caveat, of course, is finding the time to get those precious Zs with a new infant in your life. But here’s something else to think about: because we know that obesity and weight gain go hand in hand with sleep deprivation, the better anyone sleeps, the more likely one is to lose weight and keep it off. This is true whether you’re a lactating mother or a doting father. So start negotiating with your husband or significant other. Share with him this “news” about sleep being a secret path to ideal weight (which is also something to think about this holiday weekend as you stuff yourself with food and likely have extra time to sneak in a few more hours of sleep). Maybe you can find ways to co-parent more evenly and give each other a helping hand when sleep is at stake.

Or is that totally unrealistic?

Just about the Right Amount of Sleep

November 26th, 2007 at 08:00pm Under Sleep / Sleep Disorders

Wake Up Call
Similar to cooking or baking, people are often advised to get the proper amount of sleep which is usually 8 hours. Going less than this will have adverse effects on health and the whole system of an individual such as poor production at work or gearing towards becoming sick due to lack of rest.

On the other hand, going above the usual 8 hour sleep can drive a person to become lazy and groggy, making them walking a thin line of health and keeping up with their profession. We all know that some people make the most of their time and sleep is something that they have to sacrifice. But for the recommended hours of sleep, it only remains that there is a reason for it.

There should be not more or less sleep for people. The task may indeed look hard for the normal Tao. But being productive goes way beyond sleeping and people know at the back of their minds, how much the proper sleep should be for them today.

Cramming Adds To Sleepless Nights

November 25th, 2007 at 11:40am Under Sleep / Sleep Disorders

Cramming and Sleeping Students
This issue covers most students, particularly the ones who have a problem with doing advanced studies and preparations as far as their school work is concerned. Essays and thesis papers require some time to finish and while preparatory stages are given at their convenience, kids and teens simply wait for the last minute before they even think of doing some work to avoid cramming and getting sleepless nights ahead.

Cramming is a common mentality that is experienced everywhere. The usual belief is if you can sacrifice a day or two’s sleep, then you have no problem. But mind you, there are a lot of factors to consider as well such as time constraints when you cram.

Further, you may not turn in quality work, something prevalent when you lack sleep since your mind needs to rest too. In the end, both efforts are deemed as futile. You don’t get decent grades and you end up sacrificing your health in the process.
